Discovering your computer has malware is stressful — but it's not the end of the world. With the right steps, you can completely remove most infections without losing your files or spending money on expensive repair services. This guide walks you through the entire process, from identifying the infection to verifying your system is clean.
Step 1: Identify the Symptoms
Before you start removing anything, confirm you're actually dealing with malware. Common signs include:
- Your PC is significantly slower than usual
- Unusual pop-up ads appear even when no browser is open
- Programs crash unexpectedly or refuse to launch
- Your browser homepage or search engine has changed without you doing it
- Unknown programs appear in your taskbar or startup list
- Your antivirus has been disabled or won't open
Step 2: Disconnect from the Internet
The moment you suspect an infection, disconnect your computer from the internet. This prevents the malware from communicating with its command-and-control server, stops it from downloading additional payloads, and prevents it from sending your data to attackers.
On Windows: click the network icon in the system tray → Disconnect. On Mac: go to System Settings → Network → turn off Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Boot into Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential drivers and services — most malware cannot run in this environment, making it much easier to remove.
- Windows 10/11: Hold Shift and click Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart → Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode
- Mac: Hold the Power button until startup options appear → Hold Shift → click Continue in Safe Mode
Step 4: Run a Full Malware Scan
In Safe Mode, run a full system scan with a reputable anti-malware tool. DT Malware Safe's real-time scanner and full-disk scan will:
- Scan every file and process on your system
- Cross-reference against 2 billion+ malware signatures
- Use heuristic analysis to catch unknown threats
- Automatically quarantine everything it finds
Let the scan complete fully — interrupting it may miss threats nested in system directories.
Step 5: Quarantine and Delete Threats
Once the scan finishes, review everything in the quarantine list. For each detected threat:
- Delete anything flagged as definitely malicious (trojans, ransomware, spyware)
- Review anything flagged as potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) — these may be browser toolbars or bundled adware
- Restore only if you're certain something was falsely flagged (rare with modern scanners)
Step 6: Verify and Restore
After removing all detected threats, restart normally and run a second scan to confirm your system is clean. Then:
- Change all your passwords (especially email, banking, and work accounts)
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible
- Update Windows/macOS and all applications
- Review your browser extensions and remove anything you didn't install
Step 7: Prevent Future Infections
The best malware removal is the kind you never need. Going forward:
- Keep real-time protection enabled at all times
- Never open email attachments from unknown senders
- Download software only from official sources
- Keep your OS and apps updated — most infections exploit known, patched vulnerabilities
- Back up your important files regularly to an external drive or cloud
